A life coach helps you identify what changes you need to make in your life and then helps to support you while you make those changes. Simply put, coaching is a conversation between the coach and their client in which the coach supports the client to create learning and make lasting changes. These conversations facilitate learning, change and action. As your coach, I will support, encourage and motivate you to move forward from where you are now in your life, to where you?d like to be.
Not really. No matter how hard they try, friends and family can't be objective in the same way that a coach can. A coach will also provide a completely different perspective to your friends and family and unlike those close to you, will refrain from giving advice. A coach doesn't have the emotional attachment that friends and family have and is also able to challenge you and help you confront any challenges.
People enlist the services of a coach because they want to improve their situation and achieve their goals in life. They want to learn new ways of thinking and approaching situations in order to get better results. Common goals might be being more organised and efficient at work, gaining confidence in certain situations, or simply relating to other people more effectively. Coaching is about moving forward, making progress and making lasting and positive changes. Coaching can help give you a better sense of direction and focus, increase your motivation, and boost your self esteem, ultimately helping you get more out of your life.
I have clients being coached on a whole range of topics. Common themes are finding fulfilment and balance and improving self-esteem/self-confidence. Some clients are looking to change their job or career, others are hoping to improve their confidence levels generally. Some clients are bad at meeting deadlines and want to get better at time management, others want to stop procrastinating and putting off all the things they want to do with their lives. Some clients want to improve their health and lose weight or get fit. Most clients want to reduce stress in their lives.
Coaching is not about getting 'fixed'. It's not therapy or counselling. Neither is it a way of getting someone else to solve your problems for you. Coaching looks forward and also helps you emphasise the positives in your life. It's all about change and recognising that you have choices in your life. Coaching helps you take control of the choices that you make. A coach does not give instructions - the power for change remains with you.
I will give you attention, encouragement, commitment and support in a way that your friends and family cannot. I will sit alongside you without judgment and allow you the space to explore all the options available to you, even the options you haven?t thought of yet. I will encourage you to rise to challenges, overcome obstacles and get into action so that you can realise your full potential. I will help you identify realistic goals and start on the path to achieving them. Your sessions with me will be totally confidential.
There are plenty of good and useful life-coaching self-help books available. However, a coach is able to give you the feedback that a book can't. A coach will challenge you and support you when you feel like giving up. A book can't do this either! A coach will also design a programme that is specific to you, rather than a general one from a book. Get some books by all means, and if you work with a coach at the same time, you're much more likely of success.
I work with clients of all age groups.
I see most clients every week or once a fortnight.
Everyone is different but it's thought that the most people make progress in about 12 sessions over three or six months. Change doesn't happen overnight. It takes 21 days to break a habit and about three months to change behaviour. Some clients just book one or two sessions to help them with a very specific issue or to help them prepare for something specific such as an exam, a job interview or first date.
It's hoped that coaching will give you the tools to be able to continue to make changes without a coach. However, some people carry on seeing me once or twice a year just to keep on track. Ideally, after a period of coaching, you can learn to be your own coach and recognise when you are getting in a rut and need to make changes.
It doesn't have to be. I offer a sliding scale for those on lower incomes. I also offer discounts to clients who block book four or more sessions.
A session usually takes around 45 minutes. The first session often takes longer - about 60 minutes. Most coaching takes place in Manchester if you live local to me. I coach from the city centre and also from Chorlton, South Manchester. I also do coaching over the phone for clients that live further afield.
I prefer to work during the day, and try and accommodate most clients during working hours, or before they start work (such as at 8am). I do coach one evening a week for those clients that aren't available during working hours.
As well as one-to-one coaching, I run workshops for smaller groups. If you are more interested in group workshops, please let me know.
I have a degree in psychology and a certificate in Life Coaching from the Coaching Academy. I am also a member of the Association of Coaching. I have done courses on facilitation, conflict management and supervision. I have also completed courses in stress management, cognitive behavioural therapy and rational emotive behavioural therapy. These techniques are particularly useful for coaching. I am always looking out for courses to make sure that I can continue to develop professionally.
Put simply, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) believes that the way you think strongly influences the way you feel and the way you behave. Cognitive Behavioural therapy looks at the way you think and what need to change in order to help you feel and behave in ways that are more beneficial to you. These techniques are used in therapy and have been proven to be beneficial for people suffering from depression, low self-confidence and phobias. They are also extremely beneficial in the coaching environment and for people interested in personal growth. Because of my psychology background, I use CBT tecniques within the coaching environment and find that it gets results.
Coaching can be useful at any time of your life. However, good times to hire a coach are:
