With swimming pools being closed due to covid-19 restrictions there has been a huge boom in outdoor swimming. Many people are continuing to swim outside even in December and January when water temperatures are dropping to 3 degrees. It seems like a totally crazy thing so here are some good reasons to give it a go.

With covid-19 restrictions in place a lot of people are working from home and the restrictions mean that most people are going out the house less. This can have a big impact on daily movement which can affect your fitness and triathlon training.

I’ve got a long 3-4hrs ride in my plan but the weather is terrible. It’s either been below zero with a lot of ice and a heavy frost or foggy. I don’t mind a little bit of cold but I won’t risk the ice. The thought of spinning easy for hours on my turbo brings me out in a cold sweat. But the training has to get done so here are some suggestions of what you could do instead.

If you’re new to triathlon and haven’t ridden a bike regularly then you might not feel confident outside on your bike. It’s also common to be so focussed on your fitness that you never pay any attention to your actual cycling and bike handling skills.

Throughout the summer all races got cancelled because of the co-vid 19 pandemic. Lots of my clients and friends really struggled to motivate themselves without an event to train for. To start with this didn’t really affect me because I’m absolutely clear about my motivation and I don’t just train because of an event.

I’m sure many people will be thinking about New Year’s resolutions. This probably includes making health and fitness plans or getting back into training for a triathlon or running event. New Year resolutions get a bad press because they often don’t last long and they can be hard to stick to and require willpower. Do you have enough willpower to stick to your plan?

Keeping on top of your fitness and training goals during Xmas can be a challenge with a marathon of Xmas dinners and over indulgence. And while it’s not a normal Xmas the combination of time off work and interruption to your normal routine can make it hard to maintain any physical activity.
